Climate and Plant Cover. The climate
varies depending on the regions. Because the Caucasus Mountains obstruct the
cold northern winds and the country is affected by the humid and warm weather
stream coming from the Black Sea, the weather
of the country is warm and rainy in general. Subtropical characteristics are
seen in the Kolhit plain near to the Black Sea.
The precipitation generally occurs in falls and winters and its amount declines
towards the east. The annual average of precipitation is 1600 – 2000 mm in
Kolhit plain, while it is as low as 508 mm in Kartli and Kaheti plateaus. While
the difference in the temperature in the western part does not vary so much between
the summer and winter, the seasonal difference is higher in the east where the
land climate dominates. Subtropical plant cover exists in precipitous Kolhit
plain and there is a proper environment for bamboo, eucalyptus and palm trees
to cultivate. The regions close to the Black Sea
are dominated by the forests consisting of hornbeam trees with 1000-2000m height
and pine trees with 2000m height. There are pastures in the higher regions. As
the climate becomes land-characterized towards the east, the plants happen to
be more dwarfish. The one-third of the lands of the country is covered by
forests with pine, spruce, oak, chestnut, beech, fir, ash and linden trees. In
the high areas of the forests and mountains there are wild goats, deer, wild
pigs, bears, lynx, fox and wolves. There are also plenty of trout in the
rivers.
