Muslims worldwide are celebrating the Kurban-Bayram holiday. Those assembled at a mosque in Batumi began their prayers at 07:30. Due to lack of space at the mosque, Muslims occupied the surrounding yard and nearby streets with their carpets, opting for an outdoors prayer.
The celebratory prayer was conducted by Adam Shantadze, Georgian Mufti’s deputy. He congratulated Muslims on Kurban-Bayram and talked about the holiday a bit. According to him, 70 pilgrims from Georgia headed to Mecca and Medina to pray.
After praying, Muslims prepared for the animal sacrifice ritual. Several families kill livestock and evenly distribute the meat among other people. Families’ own shares are then given to their relatives and the poor. Sacrificed livestock must be healthy and not older than 6 month (for sheep) or at least 2 years old (for cows).
Kurban-Bayram is celebrated 70 days after Ramazan Bayram, a month of fasting, and lasts for three days.
